There is already a standard. However I believe this standard should be updated and I’d want a way too serious discussion about new Jalop standards.

First, let us determine the most Jalop bodystyle. I nominate the 3 door Shooting Brake. wagon? check. coupe? Check.
Least Jalop: Sport activity 5 door ‘coupe’ Worthless in all aspects other than showing off that you can spend 5 extra figures for nothing. (Now if there was a 3 door rally raid style X6 I would flip in a heartbeat, but sadly that’s never going to happen.)

Ahem. A proper ute is a wagon when you put a cap on it, a coupe when not, and a pickup too. Most don’t have jump seats, but some do, so it’s totally an open shooting brake. It can even be a convertible, too.

jalopness does not lie with the car, but with the owner. Any car can be jalop as long as the owner is imbued with the jalopitude necessary to love said car and give it the attention it deserves.

I think some more customization criteria are needed. As an example, if you build custom shifter linkage so you can convert a 3-on-the-tree shifter to work with a modern trans (Ramblin) you deserve a seat at the head table. To me stuff like that is more gearhead than just choosing what car to buy.

Do away with diesel as a jalop requirement. Spend one day in Europe and you’ll realise how these slow, clattering, smoke-belching cancerous abominations are the course of humanity and everything but interesting and/or fun to drive.

I think we need to rethink the cupholder penalty.
My truck has a total of 7 in the front - 2 liter-sized ones in each door, and 3 regular-sized ones in the center console. It’s quite useful for staying hydrated. I think there are 2 or 4 in the back as well, not certain though.
Regardless, -45 points for that is ridiculous.

JALOP!
Not Jalop
Jalop doesn’t mean how cool it is. Jalop is a beater car, rare car, has a lot of issues, but it’s loved and driven by an enthusiast that works on it pretty much every day. An Oldsmobile Delta 88 Diesel > 2015 E63 AMG S Wagon

there was no provision for flat/boxer 6 engines in the original jalop survey.
additionally, with new technologies coming into cars, i think we should incorporate new measures for
braking: drum, disc, inboard, power assisted, by-wire
steering: unpowered, hydraulic power assisted, electric power assisted
spares: full spare, temporary donut, run-flat
number of items in/presence of toolkit?

As I get it, Jalop is distinctly “cool in an unusual way”. So “normal” cool cars, ehhh. Rare unusual beater with something horribly wrong that requires you to do something weird while driving? Ooooh. It definitely *can* be cool, but stuff like a new M5 is a little more “meh” until it gets some age.

Maybe not that specific, but there have to be some basics.
- Engine not originally offered in chassis
-Trans not originally offered in chassis
-Forced induction added post-factory
-Carb to FI or FI to Carb swap
-Drive wheel swap

Then we’re getting quite a few honda motors in there (granted the best ones)
and that makes it way too easy for turbos to meet (e.g. 1.4l cruze with 138hp)
So how about for every 100 rpm above 8,000 that the redline is you get points? this allows points for other high revving engine layouts.

It depends so much on the turbo. There’s not a clean definition of cool turbos (Porsche 930) and economy turbos (most current turbos). For example the Volvo turbos of the 80’s were largely low pressure economy turbos, but they’re still cool. This issue needs particular attention.

IIRC that was the old rating system used for muscle cars, so a 350ci engine would need 250hp to be Jalop, but at the same time a 122ci engine would only need 122hp, which is terrible for a 2.0L engine. I think for the legislation on 4 cylinder engines between 1.5L - 2.0L we can keep the specific output at/near 90hp/L and weed out the economy engines while keeping most of the good ones in. Again, that would be a sub-section for naturally aspirated engines only.
Also, we should have an addendum that states engines installed into a certain car for economy and emission purposes should receive no points if a more powerful option is available, unless the engine is diesel (because we like Diesels for some reason). So the 1.4L turbo in the Cruze is not Jalop, neither is the 1.8L, but the 2.0L turbo diesel is Jalop. Something like that.

Why would a smaller engine be more Jalop though, unless output is higher? That would make sense for the Ecoboost Mustang vs the V6 Mustang, but with what you’re suggesting the base model I4T Camaro is more Jalop than the faster and more powerful V6 Camaro.
Unless it was chosen to make the car handle better, like the 2.4L in the Acura TLX. Reviews say it’s more fun to drive with the smaller engine and DCT than with the larger heavier but more powerful V6 engine.
